孟新宇对油画的本土化思考已经至为鲜明,曾经一度徘徊在大师阴影下的他,在中原厚土上的生存经验和文化记忆终于将他从迷惘中引领出来,在油画创作中有了自己明确的文化选择。我们现在看他的作品,不难从中发现,在他激越奔放的笔触和凝重浓艳的色彩中,充盈着传统文化的濡染和民同艺术的熏陶,奔流着中原文化特有的血脉,散发着浓郁的乡土气息。如果说色彩的厚重浓丽是孟新宇油画的一个重要特点,那么,类似于“写”的用笔可以说是他的油画的第二个特点。他的画皴点涂抹,笔路清新,收放自如,始终洋溢着饱满的生命激情。在风格上是表现主义,但却是中国式的表现主义。
