Tony Yi Ming: If we want to understand the challenges facing East Asia today, we must first think about why Asia is becoming the center of the international economy and why Asia will play an increasingly important role in global politics. How do you explain such a huge shift we are witnessing? Fukuyama: The political and economic arenas are very different. Obviously, the most important change in Asia occurs in the economic field. We can see this from the industrialization after the “Cultural Revolution” in China and the rise of four small dragons in Asia including South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China. However, the political process of change has been much slower than the major changes that have taken place in the economic field.
