Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR), a provider of programmable logic devices (CPLDs), announced the new MAX II device family, the industry’s lowest cost CPLD. The MAX II family offers half the cost and one-tenth the power of previous generation MAX products, while maintaining the MAX’s original availability, single-chip, nonvolatile, and ease-of-use. What’s more, the new series quadruples in capacity and more than double the performance of the previous generation MAX CPLDs. With MAX II devices, engineers in high volume consumer, communications, industrial and computational designs can replace the more expensive and less flexible small ASICs and ASSPs with MAX II devices. As a result, Altera estimates that its target market will expand from 500 million U.S. dollars to 2 billion U.S. dollars.
