Careful selection of surface acoustic wave resonators yields a very pure 300MHz voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). Voltage-controlled oscillators used in phase-locked loops (PLLs) must often be compromised between the FM range and phase noise to ensure locking under all conditions. How to get a good compromise to meet the low noise figure will depend on the choice of resonator bandwidth, insertion loss and stability. SAW resonators provide this versatility and achieve very low noise in 300MHz VCOs.
