Data from an animal model of hypertension suggest that elevated blood pressure may be an important mechanism in the brain to maintain adequate blood flow. The researchers suggest that congenital vascular abnormalities in the posterior circulation and cerebral hypoperfusion may explain in part the etiology of essential hypertension, yet this possibility remains unknown in 95% of patients.
