Oak Ridge National Laboratory made a high-performance analytical tools - resonance ionization spectrometer. The device can detect a single atom from a sample of many atoms and molecules. Resonance ionization spectroscopy allows the laser to be tuned to the resonance frequency of a particular type of atom, which frees each particular atom from losing one electron without interfering with other atoms. Adding a proportional counter to the resonance ionization spectrometer (similar to the Geiger-Muller counter) allows for the detection of free individual electrons. Resonance ionization spectroscopy can solve many of the problems in analysis. The instrument can be used to study the reaction speed of highly active atoms (such as cesium and lithium)
