We have studied in detail the photooxidation of hypocrellin A in neutral organic solvents. The photo-oxidation product is a peroxide of a-form, which is obtained via the action of the excited state of a-form and the ground-state oxygen. It has recently been discovered that the auto-sensitized photo-oxidation product and mechanism of a-carnitine vary with pH. We get the following result:
