我的工作是研究商周史,由于功利心驱使,一般非专业书不观。近日捧读扬之水先生《古诗文名物新证》(以下简称《名物》),大大破除了这种狭隘的井蛙之见。《名物》基本上是谈两汉以下的故事,几乎不涉甲骨、金文、三代文物,作者讨论的一些题目,如妇人首饰之类,也非我兴趣所在,但读罢这两册图文并茂、装帧精美的著作,除感到别开生面外,还有不少收获。这些收获首先是若干具体名物方面的知识,譬如我未尝问津的两宋香事、茶事、明代饰物之类,又如我略有所闻又不求甚解的两汉书事之类,而启示良多的则是作者在书中流露的治学取向和方法,至于作者徜徉历代之间,悠闲品味、欣赏诗文古物的心情,更是令人称羡。
