At temperatures up to 1425°C and pressures up to 25 MPa, silicon carbide whiskers were incorporated into the cordierite matrix using hot pressing techniques. Whisker additives improve the mechanical properties of the material within the composition of the material being studied. After 30 vol% of silicon carbide whiskers were incorporated, the fracture toughness increased by 80% despite the increase in critical crack size, and the fracture strength exceeded 40%. Studies show that the increase in fracture toughness is attributed to the flexing of cracks caused by the interaction between fractures and the connection of whiskers to cracks.
