Objective:To explore the underlying personality and mental defense styles in male patients with peptic ulcer. Methods:Using the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) and Defense Styles Questionnaire (DSQ), we investigated 39 males patients with peptic ulcer and 39 normal controls (NC) matched for age, education, marriage and living area. Results: Male patients with peptic ulcer showed higher need for sex, abasement, anti-social aggression, and dejection, lower need for achievement, nurturance and social aggression, pressure of social aggression, substance abuse and rejection. They also applied more immature defenses than did normal controls.Conclusion: Personality styles of poor super-ego consciousness,poor self-consciousness,strong naturalism, and significant conflicts brought forth depression and self-accusation, possibly contributing to the etiology of peptic ulcer.

Confclusion: Personality styles of poor super-ego consciousness, poor self-consciousness, strong naturalism, andnatural tensions contributed mortality and self-accusation, may contributing to the etiology of peptic ulcer.
