Based on Talmy’s framework of linguistic typology, this study uses Slobin (1996b) as a frame of reference to examine the similarities and differences of pragmatic tendencies in Chinese and English sport events through empirical research. The findings are as follows: First, the similarities between the two are manifested in the usage tendencies of the modal verbs and the “modal verbs + adjuncts” structure. Both the sports context and the continuity scenes have the basic categorization features of the additional frame language. Second, the differences between the two are manifested in different levels of pragmatic orientation. English is at the center of the addi- tional framework and Chinese is in the sub-center. Third, from a pragmatic perspective, Chinese is not typical , But a mixed-frame language that combines the features of the Adverbial Frame and Verb Frames. The differences in the pragmatic tendencies of Chinese and English sports events come from differences in the overall conceptualization of Chinese and English and the language resources characterized by “path ”.
