昌平县是干旱缺水的山区、半山区。近年在面临历史上罕见的连年严重干旱的情况下,一改以往“压弯了扁担,累折了腰,种了几回没有苗”与天硬斗的老办法。而是在科学分析的基础上,1981、1982两年采取应顺天时,用中、早熟种,等雨抢种,避开春旱,在山区保住了玉米全苗,又充分利采7、8月份的降水和光,热资源,使山区旱地玉米在连旱三年,连续两年取得大幅度增产。
