If you do not use your PC’s speakers to play music or over-care about your PC’s audio quality, then it does not matter which port your sound card is connected to for external speakers. However, if you play CD audio, MP3 files, or other audio content and want the best analog output, you should verify that you have not plugged in the speaker or external amplifier to the wrong sound card output. Some cheap sound cards have only one port, in which case you have no choice. However, many mid-range sound cards have speaker output ports and line-out ports. The difference between them is that the speaker output port uses a small internal amplifier to drive the audio signal. This signal is suitable for less expensive passive speakers, but these inexpensive amplifiers for analog output produce poor quality audio signals.
