According to Soviet experts in the United States and Western countries, the Soviet Union's computer science may slowly catch up with the West. Despite the current hardware and phone line problems, there are plans to establish regional networks and e-mail to serve scientists. But when computers are available, industry and government agencies will be given priority over scientists. Some research institutes are using E1, brus-1 computers with 10 processors and 12.15 million operations per second. Most of the normal supercomputers in use are BESM-6 computers, only 10% of the above, and have a storage capacity of 32 kilobytes. Only a handful of Soviet scientists have personal computers.
