国民党国民政府国防部于1946年6月在南京黄埔路国民党中央党校旧址成立,第一任部长白崇禧,参谋总长陈诚。1948年夏,何应钦继任部长,顾祝同任参谋总长。1948年底徐永昌接任部长。1949年阎锡山继任之,淮海战役后该部迁往广州,后迁重庆、成都,1949年12月大部遣散,接着成都解放,一小部分迁台湾。它在大陆的时间不长,但却是蒋介石发动三年内战的最高军事决策指挥机构;是国民党按美国五角大楼的意愿雕塑的“最理想”、“最科学”、直接受美国顾问团控制的最高军事机关。
