Chemical weathering. Fort Jenkins (1957) Definition: The process by which bedrock adapts to surface thermal states, physical-chemical conditions, and biological effects is called weathering. Many chemical weathering effects of water on rocks, such as hydrolysis, dissolution, oxidation, hydration, combined action, ion exchange, carbonation, cementation and dialysis, are among the most effective. Weathering is the natural process of free energy reduction within a system. Minerals have been transformed into the most stable compounds under the surface stripe by weathering, while solutes are enriched in water.
