“洞庭天下水,岳阳天下楼。”岳阳楼俯瞰洞庭,天下闻名。在民间传说中,岳阳名楼又与名匠名仙结缘。名匠,是指鲁班。名仙,则指八仙当中的吕洞宾。据说岳阳楼原址是三国时期一个操练水军兵马的阅兵台,由东吴都督鲁肃所建。唐开元四年(716),被贬为岳州刺史的张说在游览鲁肃阅兵台旧址时,面对浩渺洞庭,豪兴大发,决定在此修造一座“天下名楼”。从潭州(长沙)来的青年木工李鲁班成了这项工程的总管。张说限李鲁班在一个月内设计出一座三层、四角、五梯、六门、飞檐、斗拱的楼阁图纸。

Zhang said the limit of Li Luban within a month to design a three-storey, four corners, five ladder, six doors, cornices, brackets cabinets drawings.
