Marina Joubert is a science communications consultant from South Africa and coordinator of the scientific diffusion of SciDev.Net. In this article, she explains in detail why scientists should be adept at dealing with the media. In everyday life, we usually make judgments and decisions based on what we know in the mass media. For most people, the media is even the only way to get scientific information. The scientific community can no longer deny the importance of the media. However, many researchers still do not undergo any training on public speaking, interviewing or public writing. It is not surprising that they should avoid media interviews and public platforms.
