年逾古稀的蔡广义,是北镇县闾阳镇兴胜村的农业技术员。在推广科学种田的20多年服务生涯中,他深知科学技术的价值,了解农民需要知识的迫切心情。他为了买书,省吃俭用,戒烟戒酒,将积攒下来的4000余元全部用来购书订报,于1984年创办了家庭图书室。现藏有各类图书4000余册、报刊31种。其中科技书3244册。几年来,已接待县内外读者2万人次,解答各种疑难问题2700多个,提供各类致富信息2144条,创造直、间接经济效益近百万元。小小的家庭图书室成为远近农民求知的阵地,致富的参谋部。传播致富信息,推广科技知识,陶冶思想情操,为振兴农村经济服务,是蔡广义兴办家庭图书室的宗旨。他每天都要接待农民读者,有时多达30多人次。村民蔡某人工栽培蘑菇失败了来图书室求教,从《蘑菇栽培》等书中学到了真本事,1987年收入上万元。从而带动十多户农民也养起蘑菇。吴某从《蔬菜栽培》等图书中掌握了种菜技术,一年三种两收,5亩菜地年收入8000余元。还有一个人称“夜游神”的小青年,昔日偷摸、赌博打架出了名。在蔡广义的热心帮助下,改掉了恶习,并按书中的技术试种西瓜、茄子等获得成功,纯收入2500余元。他激动地说:“我头一次尝到了走正路致富的甜头”。
