Scientists found that eating an apple a day helps to longevity and protect against various diseases. Because Drosophila and humans have many similarities in how genes are expressed, scientists experiment with a group of flies that feed them either normal or apple juice. This study, published in the American Journal of Agricultural and Chemical Foods, shows that the first group of flies had an average lifespan of 50 days and the flies fed the apple-juice diet lived more than 5 days. Researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong believe that antioxidants contained in apple juice kill many toxic and harmful biochemicals, including toxins that cause aging in the body. Drosophila fed apple juice not only prolongs average life expectancy by 10%, but also improves walking, crawling and mobility after aging. A spokesman for the American Chemical Society believes experiments with fruit flies can be extended to other animal species and humans. In another study,
