中国近代迟缓发展的症结是传统的个体手工业生产方式顽强地存在着，，人们斗争任务本身就受它牵制，因而对先进思想的追求，都带有形式主义的特点。有中国特色社会主义，是按客观规律消灭手工业个体经济存在的条件，使中国社会主义在更加广大物质基础上得到发展。
The crux of the slow development in modern China is that the traditional mode of production of individual handicrafts exists tenaciously, and the task of people’s struggle itself is subject to it. Therefore, the pursuit of advanced thinking carries the characteristics of formalism. Socialism with Chinese characteristics is a condition for eliminating the existence of an individual economy in handicrafts according to objective laws and enables Chinese socialism to develop on a broader material basis.
