Severe pain between secondary root canal treatments is the most common side effect. If post-treatment pain is primarily periapical inflammatory response, then anti-inflammatory agents may be complementary to or instead of the usual given analgesics. Dexamethasone is an oral anti-inflammatory agent. The authors studied oral dexamethasone to treat pain after conventional root canal preparation.
