The authors used the method of culturing Tetrahymena Pyriformis to study the toxicity of heavy metal cadmium, zinc and calcium. Culture of Tetrahymena tephigus with a medium containing cadmium increased the content of thiol-rich proteins in this single-cell organism, with a significant correlation (0.97) with the increase in the concentration of cadmium in the medium. When the concentration of cadmium was 1.5 × 10 ~ (-6) M, the level of thiol in this organism was 24 times that of the control group. When the concentration of zinc and calcium reaches 1 × 10 ~ (-4) M, it has no effect on the sulfhydryl level in vivo. When zinc or calcium were added to the cadmium medium at the same time, zinc and calcium had no effect on the increase of metallothionein caused by cadmium exposure to Tetrahymena piriformis.
