California software developer 3DGeo Development Corp. patented the rapid matching of seismic imaging in the United States to travel. The technique stems from 3-D prestack Kirchhoff depth migration. In complex geological formations where 3-D pre-stack imaging is required, the offset technique relies heavily on 3-D travel calculations. According to 3DGeo, the complex velocity models in these regions pose problems of stability and accuracy to 3-D finite difference travel time algorithms. The company claims that in such areas it is far less efficient than fast-matching to calculate travel in an adaptive, speed-dependent grid increment. This patented technique uses a fixed rectangular grid for the global solution of the acoustic equation, which is said to be unconditionally stable and positive
