Randolph Qubk 等所著的《A Grammar of Contemporary English》(以下简称G.C.E.)在讲到专有名词与冠词的关系时指出:专有名词少用冠词,其冠词对照(articlecontrast)现象尤为稀少。例如:有Paris,而无 The Paris 的用法,有 The Hague,而无Hague 的用法。但是,说稀少,总还是有,有的还可以在新闻报导中不时见到。作为专有名词,为什么会出现冠词对照现象呢?这是一个颇为复杂的问题。现在就G.C.E.在地理名词方面举出的(the)Congo和(the)Lebanon两例,略加分析。
Randolph Qubk et al., “A Grammar of Contemporary English” (GCE for short), when referring to the relationship between proper nouns and articles, pointed out that the use of proper nouns is less related to articles and the articlecontrast phenomenon is particularly rare . For example: There is Paris, without the use of The Paris, there The Hague, without Hague usage. However, we can say that there are still a few things in the world, and some of them can be seen from time to time in the news reports. As a proper nouns, why does the article appear contrast? This is a rather complicated issue. Let us now give a brief analysis of two cases of the Congo and the Lebanon cited by G.C.E. in geographical terms.
