历史上,亚运会曾经两次遭遇被弃办的命运,最后都是泰国曼谷接过举办重任,泰国也因此在12年内举办了三届亚运会。1966年,第5届亚运会在泰国曼谷举行。大会开幕前,韩国首都汉城(今首尔)向亚奥理事会提出申办第6届亚运会的申请。由于当时没有其他国家提出申办,汉城顺理成章地被选定为1970年第6届亚运会的承办城市。当时韩国之所以提出承办亚运,主要是因为其经济进入增长快车道,1962年~1966
