The United States Medical Tribune Vol. 22, No. 19 (1981) Irvine, California: A team of researchers at the University of California said that the amount of antibiotics required for a pregnant or postpartum woman may be slightly higher than the standard dose. David Miller, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, said research carried out in Scandinavia suggests that the half-life of ampicillin is reduced by 50% when taken by pregnant women. Their study included patients in the first days of life who were physically similar to their pregnant counterparts. Miller’s team found that 17 patients treated with Cephalosporin Ceforanide for postpartum infection required a 33% higher dose than the control to achieve the same serum levels.
