Magnesium is sometimes a “main element” in the soil, and in alkaline earths the main exchangeable base is magnesium. However, normal soil in wet areas contains only a few tenths of percent magnesium. In sandy soil, the effective magnesium content is very low (0.001-0.004%), but in the heavy soil, the magnesium content can be up to 0.01-0.03%. Magnesium is the only metallic element that makes up the chlorophyll, the main green substance of plants. According to the determination of magnesium, this element in chlorophyll molecules accounted for about 2.7%, about 10% of the total magnesium content of leaves.
