The lack of clean water supplies and good sanitation facilities is an important issue affecting the health of people in developing countries. The World Health Organization believes that 80 percent of the world’s diseases are caused by water pollution and lack of minimum sanitation. At present, about three-fifths of people in developing countries do not have access to safe drinking water and three quarters lack health facilities. In rural areas of third-world countries, the situation is even worse.
