洋务运动的特定形式、性质和结果,与发生在它前期的太平天国运动有密切关联。如果从时间的先后来评衡,我们应该肯定,太平天国农民是先于清政府在自己的统治区域内开始“洋务”活动的,当清政府执政官吏们尚在鄙视“夷人”,窥视西学时,太平天国就已因崇尚西方宗教开始与西方传教士乃至官方人士进行外交往来了。在与西方文化的交流中,太平天国开始是处于先进于清政府的地位。但是为什么太平天国没有成为近代中国洋务活动的主持者?终极原因是在于农民无法克服小生产者的弱点,不能建立长期的巩固的政权。太平天国因悲壮的失败而中止了在近代化道路上的跋涉,从而也使中国近代化开始的一个偶然机会丧失了。简又文先生曾说:“倘太平不亡,仁玕政策得行,则中国科学物质之建设,亦即所谓‘现代化’必提早一百年。”此语不无道理。虽然如此,但太平天国却激发了清政府进行
The specific form, nature and result of the Westernization Movement are closely related to the Taiping movement that took place in its early days. If we evaluate from time to time, we should affirm that the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom peasants started the “Westernization Movement” before the Qing government in their own ruling area. When the Qing government officials were still despising “barbarians” , The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom began to engage in diplomatic relations with Western missionaries and even officials because of its respect for Western religions. In the exchange with Western culture, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom began to be advanced in the status of the Qing government. However, why the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom has not become the host of modern Western affairs in China? The ultimate reason is that peasants can not overcome the weaknesses of small producers and can not build long-term consolidated political power. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom ended its tragedy on the path of modernization due to its tragic failure, thus losing a chance of the beginning of China’s modernization. Mr. Jane Man once said: “If the policy of benevolence and peace can be achieved without prejudice, the construction of China’s scientific material, so-called ’modernization,’ will take as long as one hundred years.” Nevertheless, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom inspired the Qing government
