日本の高度成長期に広く読まれた『風と共に去りぬ』と中国の高度成長期に広く読まれた村上春樹文学とを比べると、両国のその時代の人間と社会の違いが鮮明にわかる。モダンな生活や開放的な男女関係に憧れる中国と、弱者の地位向上、民主主義、反戦平和を志向する日本、という違いである。しかし、その違いは、両国が経てきた歴史の違いがもたらしたものだったのである。
