第一历史档案舘从1925年到1957年已有三十二年的历史了。在这漫長的岁月中,机構名称是屡經改易。初名文献部,繼改掌故部、文献馆、档案舘,全属故宫博物院一个单位。1955年始由国家档案局领导,改称为第一历史档案舘,并开始走上專業化的途徑,与社会上的图书馆、博物舘鼎足而三,成为社会文化事業的一个重点單位。档案舘現在保管的档案,基本上是清宫原有的内阁、軍机处、內务府、宗人府及民国以来设在紫禁城以內的清史舘的档案。也就是說,在1925年故宫博物院成立时,就宫内現存的那些档案为基础的
