“麻雀”Ⅲ装备到海军舰队,又使海军增添了一种非常必要的防空能力。现在,已可从正常视力能见距离以外迎头攻击敌机,并将它击毁。现代飞机的高速度,使得远距离迎头攻击越来越加重要,因为要接近敌机尾部,势必需要更多的时间,这样敌机就可能侵入到防御区域的縱深地带。各种砲、火箭和性能较差的导弹均不能适应迎头攻击时高速接近的要求。然而,“麻雀”Ⅲ却是专同为解决这个同题而设计的;连同其其它特性,诸如可靠的全天候工作性能,单发命中率高,射程比较大等,这就使它成为几乎在任何(土人力)合都可使用的、性能最好的一种空空导弹。
