1947年17个国家排球协会的代表在巴黎举行会议,正式成立了国际排球联合会,负责领导国际排球运动。国际排联现已拥有140多个会员国。目前世界性的排球比赛有: 世界排球锦标赛:每四年举行一次。规模最大,男女可参加24个队。男子从1949年开始,女子从1952年开始。奥运会排球赛:1964牟18届奥运会才把排球列入正式比赛项目。参加的队数有限,一般是东道主队、上届奥运会冠军队、世界锦标赛冠军队和奥运会前一年各洲锦标赛的冠军队,若名额不足,将由国际排联与各大洲协商,指定某国再举行各大洲落选队的选拔赛。1981年,国际排联作出新规定:凡获得世界杯男子比赛的冠军,有直接参加下届奥运会的资格,但世界杯女排冠军尚无此资格。世界杯排球赛:每四年举行一次,规模与奥运会相当,由各大洲选拔的冠军队、上一届世界杯冠军队、奥运会冠军队、世界锦标赛冠军队和东道主队参加比赛。
In 1947 representatives of 17 national volleyball associations held a meeting in Paris, officially established the International Volleyball Federation, responsible for leading the international volleyball.
