《大小舞台之间——曹禺戏剧新论》在钱理群先生的学术生命中有一种特殊的意义。钱先生是在一九九○年初夏开始萌生写这部书的念头的。那时他正躺在北医三院的病床上,等候命运的裁决。他记起鲁迅在大病之后,曾产生过先前所没有的“要赶快做”的念头,于是自己也“不免焦虑起来,以至于恐慌”(《后记》)。当时很多学人在经历了喧嚣与动荡之后沉湎于消沉与低迥的心态,钱理群却在手术之后匆匆忙忙地一头扎进了曹禺的世界,三十余万言的著作以每天近五千字的速度在短短几个月里一气呵成。
