The effect of prolactin on ovarian function has been a controversial issue. Hyperprolactinemia has been shown to shorten the woman’s luteal phase and develop amenorrhea. It has also been reported that prolactin shortens the luteal phase of women and monkeys and decreases progesterone concentrations. It has been shown that administration of estradiol to the whole body of a rhesus monkey or injection directly into the corpus luteum has a strong role of solubilizing the body. Estradiol also inhibits the secretion of progesterone by dispersed human luteal cells. This article aims to evaluate the effects of estradiol and prolactin on progesterone production by rhesus monkeys stimulated with human LH. Proanthropytes were obtained from 10 adult macaques after ovulation induction. Seven lutealities are generally available from each animal, and microscopically these luteal histologies are not different from those produced in normal cycles.
