Military meteorological satellites carry two daily infrared instruments to collect weather information. One of them is major, a large field of view high resolution scanning radiometer. It provides Visible (“Albedo”) and Infrared (Temperature) information to Air Force GCI data bases. The other is an infrared measuring instrument that measures 16 narrowband infrared energies in a clear field of view at regular intervals. The obtained data are processed by computer to extract information about cloud cover, cloud height, vertical temperature distribution, vertical relative humidity distribution and atmospheric ozone content. This article describes the related infrared camera technology and how it can be combined with a primary infrared sensing system; the latter collects a large amount of information daily and forms an important part of the global military meteorological data.
