A shopkeeper who sells goods for more than what he paid for them makes a profit on the transaction. On the other hand, one who sells goods for less than what he paid for them makes a loss on the transaction. The profit (or loss) made on a transaction is often expressed as a percentage of the cost price (ie. the price paid by the shopkeeper for the item).
