(一)“梅红早5号”本品种是华南农学院农学系1974年用“梅江早3号”与“红珍早1号”杂交,于1978年育成的早稻早中熟新品种。1979年早造参加该学院品比试验,平均亩产815.8斤,比对照种“广陆矮4号”增产19.1％,达极显著水平,名列首位。1980年早造省区试早熟种组34个点统计,平均亩产715.4斤,比“广陆矮4号”增产122.8斤,增幅20.7％,在5个参试品种中,夺取鳖头。1981年早造继续参加省区试,30个点平均亩产655.8斤,比“广陆矮4号”增产103.9斤,增幅18.8％,同样达极显著水准,在3个品种中,名列前茅。大田生产示范,一般亩产600—800斤。
