Modern land, sea and air forces turned to science and technology to ensure the victory of a limited war. The slow movement of the U.S. Army towards an automated tank increased the mobility of the Army. Artillery and missiles strengthened its firepower, and radio and telephone increased its internal links. Now in the United States Army, the number of infantry still accounts for 1/4 to 1/2 of the total force. The same is true of the Army in other major countries. Some experts believe that nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, biological weapons and guerrilla tactics have rendered traditional infantry obsolete, but the final outcome of the war still depends on infantry. The South Atlantic and Iran-Iran war are two examples. Therefore, those countries that are known for their science and technology are striving to develop and use mechanical weapons so that ordinary infantry can get rid of rifles and walking alone.
