晚明时期,宦官专权益盛。朝野人士或以引导宦官言行之向善,或企图结好宦官势力争夺朝政话语权,或出于以一己学说俘获君心之私念,纷纷致力于历代宦官传记文献的汇辑与评论,思想家王畿所辑《中鉴录》即是其中之一。《中鉴录》七卷,《中国古籍善本书目》著录为明刻本,藏故宫博物院。日本国立公文书馆“内阁文库”藏有明万历三十九年刘成跋刊本五册。两本同版,故宫本后印,有多处剜改、删削,主要表现在目录、序跋、正文内容等方面,剜、删特征一贯,版片配补痕迹亦相当明显,内阁本则较完整地保存了该书原貌,其在日本的递藏轨迹相对清晰。《中鉴录》的编辑初衷乃寄望有助于宫廷宦官教育,且在万历朝廷产生了一定影响,也为晚明政治思想史和宦官史研究留存了宝贵史料。
