小时候,我每次回中国探望亲人,亲戚们都会说我是“竹笙妹”【注】,他们取笑我因为在美国长大而不懂中文,不懂中国的文化和习俗。他们和我说话后,一般还会加问一句:“你明白我说的意思吗?”说句实话,我当时是有点生气的,觉得他们瞧不起我。回到美国后,我就很用功地学习中文,每个星期六都去中文学校。不知不觉中,我已经在中文学校学习8年了。回想起来,我现在去学中文的理由与小时候已大不相同了。
When I was young, every time I went back to China to visit my relatives, my relatives would say that I was a “girl.” They make fun of me because I grew up in the United States but did not understand Chinese and did not understand Chinese culture and customs. After they talked to me, they generally added: “Do you understand what I mean?” To be honest, I was a little angry at the time, thinking they looked down upon me. After returning to the United States, I studied hard in Chinese and went to Chinese schools every Saturday. Unconsciously, I have been studying in a Chinese school for eight years. In retrospect, the reason I am now studying Chinese is very different from my childhood.
