A thorough study of the mutual understanding in the history of Russia and Poland is an important way to explore the history of the relations between Russia and Poland, and it is also the key to grasp the prospect of the relations between the two countries. During the Northern War years, the people in St. Petersburg began to feel superior to the Russian Empire over Poland. The seven-year war led St. Petersburg to finally establish an extremely negative and extremely contemptuous assessment of the country and social fabric of Poland. Ekaterina II succeeded in inculcating the arrogance of this empire into the consciousness of the aristocracy, laying a broad social foundation for Russia to consolidate serfdom and expand westward. As a ruling group, Russians’ understanding of Poland played a significant role in promoting the relations between Russia and Poland.
