毛泽东文艺思想是马克思主义文艺观与中国现代文艺实践相结合的产物,是以毛泽东、邓小平、江泽民为代表的中国共产党人在革命和建设中同党内外各种错误思潮不断斗争,从而逐步丰富和发展的文艺理论体系。毛泽东文艺思想包括新文化思想,文艺反映论,“双百”方针和“二为”方针,是系统的、中国式的、马克思主义的文艺理论。毛泽东文艺思想的本质,就是文艺创造主体与接受主体在双向结构的运行过程中所达到的一致性。十一届三中全会以后,党中央破除了“左”的束缚,以文艺为人民服务、为社会主义服务,代替了文艺为政治服务的口号,解放了文艺生产力。“二为”方针的提出,是对毛泽东文艺思想的发展,是新时期文艺的历史要求,它为广大文艺工作者正确地反映生活,评价生活,从而创造出高质量的文艺作品,提供了思想上的保证。因此,研究、探讨毛泽东文艺思想体系的形成和发展过程,具有重要的现实意义。
