《群山淡景》是石黑一雄第一部作品。小说以主人公悦子回忆故友佐知子及其女儿万里子的故事展开。由于痛苦的生活经历以及内心的负疚感,悦子把景子的故事附着在佐知子和万里子身上。独特的叙事方式使故事充满神秘感和吸引力。通过分析“天使”与“魔鬼”般性格的悦子与“孤独、自闭”的景子这两个人物形象,我们可以得出日本对女性的压抑,同时也表明二战对人们精神的创伤。
