晚明时期,金石古器物的收藏鉴定之风,如果从文物鉴定学或古器物学的角度来看,已由金石铭文研究转向器物鉴定和辨伪研究;然从造物艺术观念的视角观察,我们发现,晚明士人观物用物(古物清赏)的行为,较之宋代士人,亦发生着深刻的变化。由此,不仅反映了当时知识阶层的学术转向,亦反映出社会风尚变迁对士人阶层的影响及其造物艺术价值观念的转变。诸种变化,无不隐显于士人日常生活化的古器物赏鉴活动之中。
