平顺县留村位于晋东南太行山区,面积3.6平方公里,有5条较大支沟。全村270户,1100口人,劳力350个,人均面积4.9亩,人均耕地9分。这里山高坡陡,石厚土薄,岩石裸露,耕地占总面积的18.5％,属典型的土石山区。海拔高程1000米左右,年平均降雨量620毫米,但分布不均,6～8月占全年雨量的65％。治理前山上缺草无树,水土流失非常严重,农业生产长期处于落后状态,是当时平顺县有名的贫困村。
