红背和棕背是我省东部林区的主要害鼠。生活在多种针、阔叶林中,栖居在枯枝落叶、倒木、树根、草丛及跳石塘下面的洞内,昼夜活动,为害落叶松、樟子松、黄波罗等30多种树木。在秋末青草干枯后到早春青草萌芽前啃食树皮,也吃种子。林木被害后,轻者造成伤口,生长缓慢;重者由于环状剥皮而死亡;种子被害后,破坏了直播造林和天然更新。桓仁县八里甸林场,1981年落叶松林发生鼠害面积达5,000余亩,平均被害率46.4％,被害死亡率20.5％。
