The Socialists (including the Socialist, Social Democratic and Labor parties) developed from the combination of socialism and the European workers’ movement in the mid-to-late 19th century. It pursues the road of reformism. The Socialist International, established in 1951, has now developed into the largest coalition of political forces in the world with 141 member-parties, including members of the formal membership, consultative and observer parties, and associated organizations. Socialists in European countries are the backbone of the organization.
