France and Africa’s Uranium Partnership France has been implementing a more robust nuclear energy policy than the rest of Western Europe. In the capitalist world, 80% of proven low-cost uranium ore reserves are found in the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa. Elsewhere, only France and some French-speaking African countries have adequate uranium resources to support their country’s nuclear policy. France’s disposable uranium reserves total 120,000 tons on the basis of current prices. Of these, 50,000 are produced in France and are held by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and its subsidiaries, 10,000 tonnes are in the hands of French private companies and the remaining 60,000 tonnes are the French Atomic Energy Commission and its overseas affiliates (mainly in Gabon, Niger and Canada) Owned.
